The full launch line-up for both Microsoft‘s Xbox One and Sony‘s PS4 have been revealed, though more games could be added and it’s always possible that some of these games could be delayed.
David Thier posted the Xbox One line-up earlier today. Microsoft has a total of 23 titles lined up, many of which are cross-over, with a handful of Xbox exclusives like the really great looking Dead Rising 3. According to Microsoft, these games will all be available on day one.
According to The Verge, Sony has a total of 33 launch titles which will be available by year’s end. Like the Xbox One, many of these are cross-platform and many are exclusives. Fifteen of the titles will be available as physical media and digital download, while the remaining 18 will be digital download only.

Meanwhile, both Sony and Microsoft have numerous content bonuses available for a variety of cross-platform games.
Games like Assassin’s Creed IV will lean toward the PS4 while Call of Duty: Ghosts leans toward Xbox One—often these perks are timed with later releases on other systems. If I had to pinpoint a pattern I’d give the Xbox One an advantage across shooters and sports games and the PS4 an advantage in third-person stuff like Grand Theft Auto, Watch Dogs, and so forth.
To be honest, these sorts of content bonuses can be nice for owners of one system or another, but are often not what sells a system to begin with—though the European FIFA 14 deal may prove an exception to that rule.
Paul Tassi argues that “Microsoft has a pretty solid line-up” and I agree.
A couple weeks back, we took a closer look at just the exclusive launch line-up. I said at the time that neither Sony or Microsoft could really claim the Crown of Console Land.
In retrospect, I think Microsoft has a small, but definite edge. Not a secure roost, by any means, but an edge. Even though some of Microsoft’s exclusives will be timed exclusives, that edge will matter at launch.
Things won’t really get interesting until 2014 when we start seeing games likeTitanfall hit shelves and when Sony’s bigger first-party titles start to drop.
Another interesting thing, to me at least, is the presence of indies in Sony’s launch lineup. While I think it’s great that Sony has put such effort into its indie offerings, I do think it would have been wise for the company to include one or two more AAA titles on day one. A new Uncharted or God of War perhaps, if only to keep Killzone Shadow Fall company.
In related news, neither the lack of any really compelling exclusive AAA titles are appearing at launch nor the fact that many of the biggest games are launching on both current and next-generation systems is putting a dent in next-gen hardware sales.
Sony announced that over 1 million pre-orders have been placed for the PS4 already.
“This is strong given Sony sold less than 1M units of PS3 at launch in 4Q’06,” says Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, “and supports our thesis that the upcoming cycle will ramp up faster than the last one.”
So much for mobile games destroying video game consoles.
